The DQYDJ Weekender, 10/06/2012

Posted By PK    Last updated October 7th, 2012 8 Comments

Hey, did you know that you can hear our boring voice and dry humor in audio format?  That’s right – we contribute a weekly segment to the Two Guys and Your Money Podcast.

I’ve heard I sound like Ben Stein.  No word yet on whether I’ll be in a sequel of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, but my best friend’s sister’s boyfriend’s brother’s girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who’s going with the girl who saw Ferris pass out at 31 Flavors last night that I was on the short list.

Okay that’s enough of that.  More Weekender!

  • Podcast boss Average Joe writes a great piece (complete with onomatopoeia in the title) about things to do to save yourself money in the fourth quarter.  That’s now, if you haven’t been paying attention…
  • Greg at Control Your Cash succinctly describes why a society that forces everyone to use public transportation isn’t some utopian ideal.  Guess what, folks?  Opportunity costs (time is the most important resource).

  • Mochi and Macarons seems to have taken Cameron’s article on not having a smartphone to heart – but one-ups him by dumping a cellphone altogether.  May we suggest a burner?  MagicJack?
  • The Financial Samurai has a great post at Untemplater on the English Rugby players banned from an all-you-can-eat joint.  I asked a friend about getting kicked out of all-you-can-eat restaurants in America – “not during a meal”, he said.  “That’s breach of contract.”  Of course, most restaurants can ban you at any time from returning.  Keep that in mind when you try to emulate Homer!

Why thank you for the link inclusion. I didn’t specifically read Cameron’s article but it seems to be a popular thing to do among those of us who aren’t immediately addicted to smartphones :)

I wouldn’t say no to a smartphone if the price was lower, say around $50/month, but as it stands, I’d rather pay $20 – $40 than $70 – $100

How many minutes do you need? Did you look at Virgin?

      • http://www.dqydj.net/ PK

Although, if you’re not in the US anymore you’ll have to check their coverage where you are (pretty sure they are everywhere).

BF and I are sharing the phone so I think based on our past usage, 200 or less should be sufficient. We rarely hit 50 minutes a month but in some months it went up to 200.

Oh and I forgot to thank you re: Virgin Mobile. I forgot they were in Canada!!
I was only looking at the usual suspects:
        Rogers — OUT
        Bell — Ditto
        TELUS — Ditto
        Koodo — Contender
        Fido — 2nd Runner Up
Wind Mobile — Awful service I heard
Public Mobile — good only in Montreal or Toronto :( I need something a little more
And now Virgin! The $35 plan looks good. So does the $50 one which we may get if we need more time.
Do you know if Virgin’s service is good? I don’t want it to cut out in the middle of a call.

        • http://www.dqydj.net/ PK

I have nothing to add on Canadian plans, haha. I’d try the coverage map – make sure you at least have the core network through everywhere you drive/travel. Sometimes you can get a company to let you try their coverage through major routes, but I don;t know how Virgin would do that.

          • http://www.thebudgetingtool.com/ Mochi & Macarons

I think Virgin is good. I’m going to go with them and if I hate them (no contracts, have my own phone), I can flee to Koodo.

I had to have my kid remind me what onomatopoeia is before I commented. Yes, I did! Shazam! Yes, I did.
