Where Do People Work?

Posted By PK    Last updated September 20th, 2011 Leave a Comment

Here’s an interesting link, this time brought to you by an Economist piece which asks, “Who are the world’s biggest employers?”.  Luckily, they answer.  The top spot went to our own United States Department of Defense, with a whopping 3.2 million people on the payroll.

Even more impressive is the fact that the United States boasts a population of 312,000,000 (and change), so the DoD employs more than 1% of the population.  It gets better.  The (seasonally adjusted) number of non-farm workers in August was 131,132,000 in the United States.  The DoD therefore employs around 2.44% of all non farm workers.  Impressive.

The top two private employers, unsurprisingly, are McDonald’s and Walmart – which do employ people overseas.  They contribute 3.8 million jobs to the worldwide economy.

Here’s the rest of the infographic.
